Vice President: Hubert Horatio Humphrey As Lyndon Bryant Johnson entered the oval office resulting from the assassination of President Kennedy. Many things in Johnson’s presidency were accomplished and helped out the country, consisting of his environmental policies along with his Great Society policy. Through many of the acts that he passed have very beneficial effects for the people. Not all was well and dandy in his term, when Johnson escalated the involvement in the Vietnam War, mainly the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. But without a doubt his good outweighed his bad and resulted in receiving a grade of a B. Coming into office Johnson had set many goals for his presidency, with atop of the list civil rights, followed by helping the poor, and working on the environment and conserving it. He passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which enabled all races the ability to vote without any restrictions. Also, the major Civil Rights Act of 1964, and this act ended all discrimination in the workforce and any other public facilities. These acts helped with the civil rights movement and aiding the blacks into their equality. There were many programs with helping the poor, programs that would aid them in paying for college, help with their basic needs, and also some programs to help with child day-care services and watch programs. Also, Johnson passed the Clean Air Act of 1965 and the Air Quality Act of 1967. These two acts had reduced at the moment the bad air quality that was consuming mainly from the emissions from the vehicles. The Clean Air Act really helped with that by setting standards on auto emissions. The Clean Air Act has provided information that it has began to hurt the planet more now than help it. Johnson had a solid relationship with congress seeing as they never really put to much of fight up against him and his policies. They especially supported Johnson in his views and policies concerning the environmental issues. In all of the acts that Johnson had put in place and had attempted to pass, it was and congress really never had any problems with it. What Johnson needed passed it was passed in congress. With all the evidence presented there is no way to be able to say that congress and President Johnson had a bad relationship. I would say that they had a good and healthy relationship. The most positive outcome out of Johnson’s presidency would have to be his policy towards civil rights and mainly his passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This act put a major and one of the final steps in for the civil rights movement. This act banned all discrimination in facilities private or public. This included all the restaurants and hotels. This also ended the discrimination in the workforce in hiring new employees. This had been a major topic and struggle for many Americans and on that day it had ended in the legal aspect. This also was not the only and last legislation upon this topic; it only had gotten better from this point. Johnson didn’t have all good decisions while in office, he had some bad decisions. One of those decisions was his choices upon the Vietnam War. As Johnson continued to tell the American people that he was going to stop the push of the communists. He never achieved this goal and he continued to send troops over to Vietnam when we were not involved in this war until he decided to aid South Vietnam. In the year 1968 Johnson deployed 550,000 troops (American Men). This was not what America wanted or needed at the time. America just had major casualties in the war with no real benefit from it at all. Also the United States poured massive amounts of money into this war that we eventually withdrew from and didn’t even end in the result we were fighting for (Communists won). Taking American men to fight a war that didn’t even involve us didn’t exactly please the American families. The way the Johnson handled the conflict in Vietnam was horrendous, there were many other ways that Johnson could have handled the situation and had much better results. With Johnson passing the legislation behind civil rights was definitely the most significant to American as it is today. With passing the Voter’s Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act, it has definitely impacted the way the world is today. Without these bills passed there is no way that an African-American would have been able to run for president. If then a black wasn’t able to even vote how they would be able to run for office. All of the rights that Johnson had pushed for are still intact today and have been existent since then. This is the new way of life in America and it was influenced and made possible by Lyndon Bryant Johnson. Johnson set a path that was followed not only by future presidents but by many others all over the world. With all of these facts stated from the analysis of Lyndon Bryant Johnson, he made many good outcomes, but wasn’t perfect. His highlights in the good aspect were the Voter Rights Act, the Civil Rights Act, Clean Air Act, and the Air Quality Act. These acts helped him overshadow the not so good decisions involving the Vietnam War. These were not all of his positive or negative outcomes during his presidency.
